Currently windows are scattered in a few separate lists. If you need to
go through the windows, you have to do it piece by piece. On the other
hand, with the overhaul of window types, we've started converging
towards one universal type: Window. Keeping windows in the separate
buckets goes against this design.
Workspace::stackingOrder() already contains all windows. This change
repurposes Workspace::allClientList() from a list of "normal" windows to
all windows, i.e. Workspace::windows(), to be consistent.
There's one API change though. Scripting API will expose other window
types too. This is an intentional change so scripted effects could
operate with all windows. It also matches the current behavior observed
in libkwineffects, which exposes all windows as well.
Due to being a compositor, kwin has to conform to some certain
interfaces. It means a lot of virtual functions and function tables to
integrate with C APIs. Naturally, we not always want to use every
argument in such functions.
Since we get -Wunused-parameter from -Wall, we have to plumb those
unused arguments in order to suppress compiler warnings at the moment.
However, I don't think that extra work is worth it. We cannot change or
alter prototypes in any way to fix the warning the desired way. Q_UNUSED
and similar macros are not good indicators of whether an argument is
used too, we tend to overlook putting or removing those macros. I've
also noticed that Q_UNUSED are not used to guide us with the removal no
longer needed parameters.
Therefore, I think it's worth adding -Wno-unused-parameter compiler
option to stop the compiler producing warnings about unused parameters.
It changes nothing except that we don't need to put Q_UNUSED anymore,
which can be really cumbersome sometimes. Note that it doesn't affect
unused variables, you'll still get a -Wunused-variable compiler warning
if a variable is unused.
We use the PMF syntax so the isValid() check is unnecessary as the
compiler will notify about wrong signal at compile time. It makes
writing autotests feel less boilerplaty.
Things such as Output, InputDevice and so on are made to be
multi-purpose. In order to make this separation more clear, this change
moves that code in the core directory. Some things still link to the
abstraction level above (kwin), they can be tackled in future refactors.
Ideally code in core/ should depend either on other code in core/ or
system libs.
This change adjusts the window management abstractions in kwin for the
drm backend providing more than just "desktop" outputs.
Besides that, it has other potential benefits - for example, the
Workspace could start managing allocation of the placeholder output by
itself, thus leading to some simplifications in the drm backend. Another
is that it lets us move wayland code from the drm backend.
AbstractOutput is not so Abstract and it's common to avoid the word
"Abstract" in class names as it doesn't contribute any new information.
It also significantly reduces the line width in some places.
The .clang-format file is based on the one in ECM except the following
style options:
- AlwaysBreakBeforeMultilineStrings
- BinPackArguments
- BinPackParameters
- ColumnLimit
- BreakBeforeBraces
- KeepEmptyLinesAtTheStartOfBlocks
With a "Surface" type in kwin, KWayland::Client::Surface without fully
specified namespace will conflict with kwin's Surface type.
In some way, it also improves readability as it's clear where Surface
comes from.
When debugging modifier_only_shortcut_test in _waylandonly mode I saw
that it was failing, among other things, because some aspects were not
initialised.
This changes every test we have to run the new
Test::initWaylandWorkspace() that calls waylandServer()->initWorkspace()
but also makes sure that WaylandServer::initialized is emitted before we
proceed.
The main advantage of SPDX license identifiers over the traditional
license headers is that it's more difficult to overlook inappropriate
licenses for kwin, for example GPL 3. We also don't have to copy a
lot of boilerplate text.
In order to create this change, I ran licensedigger -r -c from the
toplevel source directory.
The new signal is emitted when the Application has fully been initialized.
It allows us to change the startup sequence, for example create workspace
before starting the Xwayland server, without making any adjustments in our
test suit.
There are several ways to handle unmapping of a wl_surface. The first
one is to destroy the associated AbstractClient instance. The second one
is to transition the AbstractClient in a special state.
The problem with the second approach is that it makes animations such as
fade out more difficult to handle since effects in kwin are geared more
towards the first approach (destroying AbstractClient).
Summary:
xdg-shell stable has been around for quite a while. A quick analysis
showed that many distros ship GTK and Qt that support both xdg-shell
v6 and stable. Therefore, we can drop support for legacy v6 protocol.

Currently, we have only one shell client type - XdgShellClient. We use
it when we are dealing with Wayland clients. But it isn't really a good
idea because we may need to support shell surfaces other than xdg-shell
ones, for example input panel surfaces.
In order to make kwin more extensible, this change replaces all usages
of the XdgShellClient class with the AbstractClient class.

This change removes all traces of wl-shell in the test suite. That's a
prerequisite for dropping wl-shell support in KWin.
Given that wl-shell and xdg-shell are not interchangeable, some tests
were removed and initialization sequence in some tests was adjusted.
The most notable change is ensuring that each plasmashell window sets
its role and initial position before committing the surface. Setting
those properties before the first surface commit is important because
our window placement code needs to know window type in order to
avoid maximizing panels, popups, etc.

So far wayland was used by internal clients to submit raster buffers
and position themselves on the screen. While we didn't have issues with
submitting raster buffers, there were some problems with positioning
task switchers. Mostly, because we had effectively two paths that may
alter geometry.
A better approach to deal with internal clients is to let our QPA use
kwin core api directly. This way we can eliminate unnecessary roundtrips
as well make geometry handling much easier and comprehensible.
The last missing piece is shadows. Both Plasma::Dialog and Breeze widget
style use platform-specific APIs to set and unset shadows. We need to
add shadows API to KWindowSystem. Even though some internal clients lack
drop-shadows at the moment, I don't consider it to be a blocker. We can
add shadows back later on.

Differential Revision: https://phabricator.kde.org/D23477
Summary:
Currently code base of kwin can be viewed as two pieces. One is very
ancient, and the other one is more modern, which uses new C++ features.
The main problem with the ancient code is that it was written before
C++11 era. So, no override or final keywords, lambdas, etc.
Quite recently, KDE compiler settings were changed to show a warning if
a virtual method has missing override keyword. As you might have already
guessed, this fired back at us because of that ancient code. We had
about 500 new compiler warnings.
A "solution" was proposed to that problem - disable -Wno-suggest-override
and the other similar warning for clang. It's hard to call a solution
because those warnings are disabled not only for the old code, but also
for new. This is not what we want!
The main argument for not actually fixing the problem was that git
history will be screwed as well because of human factor. While good git
history is a very important thing, we should not go crazy about it and
block every change that somehow alters git history. git blame allows to
specify starting revision for a reason.
The other argument (human factor) can be easily solved by using tools
such as clang-tidy. clang-tidy is a clang-based linter for C++. It can
be used for various things, e.g. fixing coding style(e.g. add missing
braces to if statements, readability-braces-around-statements check),
or in our case add missing override keywords.

Summary:
A new namespace KWin::Test is added which provides a few helper
functions. It makes it easy to setup a KWayland client connection with
the base set to be able to create a Surface and flags to create
additional interfaces. This replaces the KWayland connection dance in
init() methods. For cleanup() there is also a dedicated helper function.
In addition there are helper functions to:
* render a surface
* create a surface
* create a shell surface
* flush the wayland client connection
* access to the created interfaces - for compatibility with existing code
The idea is to extend this Test library also for other common use cases
like creating an X11 connection and X11 windows, etc.
