9d4a32596c Drop some custom list typedefs
Summary:
Qt has its own thing where a type might also have corresponding list
alias, e.g. QObject and QObjectList, QWidget and QWidgetList. I don't
know why Qt does that, maybe for some historical reasons, but what
matters is that we copy this pattern here in KWin. While this pattern
might be useful with some long list types, for example

    QList<QWeakPointer<TabBoxClient>> TabBoxClientList

in general, it causes more harm than good. For example, we've got two
new client types, do we need corresponding list typedefs for them? If
no, why do we have ClientList and so on?

Another problem with these typedefs is that you need to include utils.h
header in order to use them. A better way to handle such things is to
just forward declare a client class (if that's possible) and use it
directly with QList or QVector. This way translation units don't get
"bloated" with utils.h stuff for no apparent reason.

So, in order to make code more consistent and easier to follow, this
change drops some of our custom typedefs. Namely ConstClientList,
ClientList, DeletedList, UnmanagedList, ToplevelList, and GroupList.

Test Plan: Compiles.

8d13729031 [platforms/x11] Never block on retrace, always present after paint
Summary:
Compositing in X11 was done time shifted, meaning that we paint first, then
wait one vblank interval length and present on prepareRenderingFrame the
previous paint result. This is supposed to make sure we don't miss the vblank
and in case of block till retrace be able to continue issuing commands and
only shortly before next vblank present.

This is counter-intuitiv, not how we do it on Wayland or even on MESA with X.
The reason seems to be that the GLX backend was in the beginning written
against Nvidia proprietary driver which needed this but nowadays even this
driver defaults to non-blocking behavior on buffer swap.

Therefore remove this legacy anomaly fully and directly present after paint.
We then wait one refresh cycle and in the future can optimize this by delaying
the paint and present till shortly before vsync.

Test Plan: kwin_x11 tested on i915 and Nvidia proprietary driver.

ec610fd7ed Port one of session management connections state to a custom API
Summary:
Currently kwin opens a second ICE connection to ksmserver in order to
tell the state of kwin's whether we're logging out and saving clients or
not.

This requires that kwin launches after ksmserver to have the connection
which is a dependency I want to break.

Practically this code is already ksmserver specific as it relies on some
custom code that sends the first saveState request to kwin first.

Instead we can replace it with a bespoke IPC over DBus and siplify the
code both end. This will allow several other future enhancements that we
want with regards to handling the session state, as well as make an
effort platform agnostic session management, as well as cleaning up some
complex code.

Ksmserver calls into kwin, rather than having kwin watch ksmserver state
to allow us make sure it's race free.

7d4471eba6 Rename geometry property to frameGeometry
Summary:
In order to properly implement xdg_surface.set_window_geometry we need
two kinds of geometry - frame and buffer. The frame geometry specifies
visible bounds of the client on the screen, excluding client-side drop
shadows. The buffer geometry specifies rectangle on the screen that the
attached buffer or x11 pixmap occupies on the screen.

This change renames the geometry property to frameGeometry in order to
reflect the new meaning assigned to it as well to make it easier to
differentiate between frame geometry and buffer geometry in the future.

ffcbe24e2b Rename Client to X11Client
Summary:
Currently each managed X11 client is represented with an instance of
Client class, however the name of that class is very generic and the
only reason why it's called that way is because historically kwin
was created as an x11 window manager, so "Client" was a sensible choice.

With introduction of wayland support, things had changed and therefore
Client needs to be renamed to X11Client in order to better reflect what
that class stands for.

Renaming of Client to X11Client was agreed upon during the last KWin
sprint.

Test Plan: Compiles, the test suite is still green.

bebe81209c Port QPA away from Wayland
Summary:
So far wayland was used by internal clients to submit raster buffers
and position themselves on the screen. While we didn't have issues with
submitting raster buffers, there were some problems with positioning
task switchers. Mostly, because we had effectively two paths that may
alter geometry.

A better approach to deal with internal clients is to let our QPA use
kwin core api directly. This way we can eliminate unnecessary roundtrips
as well make geometry handling much easier and comprehensible.

The last missing piece is shadows. Both Plasma::Dialog and Breeze widget
style use platform-specific APIs to set and unset shadows. We need to
add shadows API to KWindowSystem. Even though some internal clients lack
drop-shadows at the moment, I don't consider it to be a blocker. We can
add shadows back later on.

62a7db7028 Use nullptr everywhere
Summary:
Because KWin is a very old project, we use three kinds of null pointer
literals: 0, NULL, and nullptr. Since C++11, it's recommended to use
nullptr keyword.

This change converts all usages of 0 and NULL literal to nullptr. Even
though it breaks git history, we need to do it in order to have consistent
code as well to ease code reviews (it's very tempting for some people to
add unrelated changes to their patches, e.g. converting NULL to nullptr).

45c93c6cae Destroy ShellClient before Workspace is gone
Summary:
Managing lifetime of objects during tear down is a bit clunky in KWin
mostly because the wayland server outlives the workspace.

3f4e733468 tried to tackle one aspect of this problem, but the proposed
solution is good only in short term. If a ShellClient wants to discard
force temporarily rules, it needs to access RuleBook, whose lifetime is
bounded to the workspace, no matter what happens. Otherwise, the force
temporarily rule will be applied again on the next startup.

It's worth to mention that there was another attempt to address this
problem, see commit 826b9742e9. It was reverted because some internal
clients may need to destroy Wayland resources during tear down.

This change takes another approach. In order to ensure that ShellClient
can access RuleBook during tear down, we manually destroy Wayland clients
in destructor of the Workspace class. Something is done already for X11
clients.

d2bbd2a124 [x11] Fix crash during tear down
Summary:
Any call made to a virtual method in constructor/destructor of a base
class won't go to a derived class because the base class may access
uninitialized or destroyed resources.

For example, let's consider the following two classes

    class Base {
    public:
        Base() { foo()->bar(); }
        virtual ~Base() { foo()->bar(); }

        virtual Foo* foo() const { return nullptr; }
    };

    class Derived : public Base {
    public:
        Derived() : mFoo(new Foo) {}
        ~Derived() override { delete mFoo; }

        Foo* foo() const override { return mFoo; }

    private:
        Foo* mFoo;
    };

When an instance of Derived class is created, constructors will run in
the following order:

    Base()
    Derived()

It's not safe to dispatch foo() method call to Derived class because
constructor of Derived hasn't initialized yet mFoo.

Same story with destructors, they'll run in the following order:

    ~Derived()
    ~Base()

It's not safe to dispatch foo() method call in the destructor of Base
class to Derived class because mFoo was deleted.

So, what does that weird C++ behavior has something to do with KWin? Well,
recently Compositor class was split into two classes - WaylandCompositor,
and X11Compositor. Some functionality from X11 doesn't make sense on
Wayland. Therefore methods that implement that stuff were "purified," i.e.
they became pure virtual methods. Unfortunately, when Compositor tears
down it may call pure virtual methods on itself. Given that those calls
cannot be dispatched to X11Compositor or WaylandCompositor, the only
choice that C++ runtime has is to throw an exception.

The fix for this very delicate problem is very simple - do not call virtual
methods from constructors and the destructor. Avoid doing that if you can!

This change moves Compositor::updateClientCompositeBlocking to X11Compositor
so it longer has to be a virtual method. Also, it kind of doesn't make sense
to keep it in base Compositor class because compositing can be blocked only
on X11.

684b4b635e Use more traditional doxygen style
Summary:
So far we were following a bit unique and rare doxygen comment style:

    /**
     * Contents of the comment.
     **/

Doxygen comments with this style look balanced and neat, but many people
that contribute to KWin don't follow this style. Instead, they prefer
more traditional doxygen comment style, i.e.

    /**
     * Contents of the comment.
     */

Reviewing such changes has been a bit frustrating for me (so selfish!)
and for other contributors.

This change switches doxygen comment style in KWin to a more traditional
style. The main reason for doing this is to make code review process easier
for new contributors as well us.

c438ecbb70 Don't crash when highlighted tabbox client is closed
Summary:
The compositor tries to switch to the next tabbox client when currently
highlighted client is closed. Though there is a small issue with that.
Because the switch happens too late, a dangling pointer can be inserted
into the unconstrained stacking order, which can lead to a crash later on.

There are two cases:
- compositing is on;
- compositing is off.

Compositing is on: TabBox will try to un-elevate currently highlighted
client, though by that time the client no longer owns EffectWindow, so
this is basically a no-op (that's why we haven't experienced this bug
before).

Compositing is off: TabBox will try to restack currently hightlighted
client under the next tabbox client. Given that the restack method
doesn't do any sanity checks(see Client::manage why), a client that is
about to be destroyed will be re-inserted back into the unconstrained
stacking order.

This change ensures that the switch happens before currently highlighted
client is removed from the stacking order.

BUG: 406784

Test Plan:
- Turn off compositing;
- Follow steps to reproduce in the bug report (see comment 2).

c898f96df3 [platforms/drm] EGLStream DRM Backend Initial Implementation
Summary:
This is the initial implementation of a DRM backend based on the EGLDevice,
EGLOutput, and EGLStream extensions, supporting NVIDIA graphics hardware using
their proprietary driver. The new backend will be used if the environment
variable KWIN_DRM_USE_EGL_STREAMS is set. On initialization, it will attempt to
create an EGLDevice based on the DRM device currently in use and create
EGLOutputs and EGLStreams for any attached displays. These are used to control
presentation of the final composited frame. Additionally, it will register the
wl_eglstream_controller Wayland interface so that native EGL windows created by
clients can be attached to an EGLStream allowing buffer contents to be shared
with the compositor as a GL texture.

At this time there are two known bugs in the NVIDIA driver's EGL implementation
affecting desktop functionality. The first can result in tooltip windows drawn
by plasmashell to contain incorrect contents. The second prevents KWayland from
being able to query the format of EGLStream-backed buffers which interferes
with the blur effect. Fixes for both of these are currently in development and
should appear in an upcoming NVIDIA driver release.

Additionally, hardware cursors are currently not supported with this backend.
Enabling them causes the desktop to intermittently hang for several seconds.
This is also likely a bug in the NVIDIA DRM-KMS implementation but the root
cause is still under investigation.

Test Plan:
On a system with an NVIDIA graphics card running a recent release of their
proprietary driver

    * Ensure the nvidia_drm kernel module is loaded with the option "modeset=1"
      ("# cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset" should print "Y")
    * Ensure EGL external platform support is installed
      https://github.com/NVIDIA/eglexternalplatform
    * Ensure KWin was build with the CMake option
      KWIN_BUILD_EGL_STREAM_BACKEND=ON (this is the default)
    * Start a plasma wayland session with the environment variable
      KWIN_DRM_USE_EGL_STREAMS set
    * Ensure output from KWin OpenGL initialization indicates the NVIDIA EGL
      driver is in use (as opposed to Mesa / llvmpipe).
    * Desktop should be fully functional and perform smoothly.

window. A similar check is already in AbstractClient::setDesktop, so in
general it already worked. This is just a special case for
sendClientToDesktop which supports sending to the same desktop so that
all transients are sent to that desktop.

8af6d4f5dc [x11] Emit clientRemoved after client was removed
Summary:
Currently, there is a guarantee that a client, which is about to be removed,
is no longer in the stacking order(both in constrained and unconstrained)
when Workspace::removeClient is called. However, because the client gets
removed from m_allClients after clientRemoved is emitted, it can be
re-inserted back into the stacking order.

In general, the pattern is to do some work and then notify others about
what you've done by emitting a signal. In the case of Workspace::removeClient,
we emit clientRemoved way before the client actually gets removed.

ec7fe44190 Make xstacking order dirty handling work without X11
Summary:
The xStackingOrder unlike indicated by it's name is relevant for both
X11 and Wayland and contains the stacking order of the windows used for
compositing.

So far it was determined whether it needs to be recreated based on
whether an xcb query is pending. This change introduces a boolean
variable to check whether the stacking order is dirty and guards the X11
specific code to only be run if we have an X11 connection.

This is to my current knowledge the last remaining issue where X11 was
used during the normal Wayland operation mode. Now it should be possible
to re-order the Workspace startup [1] and try to run kwin_wayland without
Wayland support.

[1] Workspace::Workspace and Workspace::init is still highly X11
specific and needs to be split into X11 only and general parts.

The ObscurringWindows are a hack to make it more unlikely that the

introduced in 2001 with SVN revision 90111

In 2001 desktop switching was probably a costly action where it was not
possible to just reorder the desktop in one frame. Nowadays we use
mostly compositing and with compositing the ObscurringWindows are
already disabled. But even in the case that no compositing is used I
consider it as very unlikely that the desktop becomes visible during the
switching. Given that I think it's time to remove this legacy solution.

630514d52a Remove roundtrip to XServer from Workspace::xStackingOrder
Introduce a method Workspace::markXStackingOrderAsDirty

Summary:
This method replaces the calls x_stacking_dirty = true in the code base
allowing for further refactoring of that functionality.

Remove roundtrip to XServer from Workspace::xStackingOrder

The method xStackingOrder is only used during a Compositor paint pass.
If the stacking order had changed, the method updated the stacking order
from X by performing a sync XQueryTree. With other words we had a round
trip to the X server directly in the paint pass.

This change rearchitectures this area by making better use of xcb. When
we notice that the stacking order changed and an XQueryTree is needed,
we directly send out the request. When xStackingOrder is finally called,
which normally happens a few milliseconds later, the reply is retreived.
In the worst case it still blocks, but in most cases the roundtrip is
gone.

If the stacking order changed again before accessing xStackingOrder the
running request is cancelled and a new request is issued. So whenever we
get into xStackingOrder it will have the current state.

The updating of the xStackingOrder is moved into a dedicated method and
xStackingOrder invokes it through a const_cast instead of operating on
mutable variables.

Test Plan: Normal system usage, no issues

With this change KWin can create window decorations for internal windows.
Thus it's also possible to move internal windows and resize them which is
especially important for the debug console.

996ee34e14 Remove the unredirect fullscreen windows functionality
Summary:
Rational: unredirect fullscreen windows is a weird beast. It's intended
to make fullscreen windows "faster" by not compositing that screen. But
that doesn't really work as KWin jumps out of that condition pretty
quickly. E.g. whenever a tooltip window is shown. KWin itself has a
better functionality by supporting to block compositing completely.
The complete code was full of hacks around it to try to ensure that
things don't break.

Overall unredirect fullscreen has always been the odd one. We had it
because a compositor needs to have it, but it never got truly integrated.
E.g. effects don't interact with it properly so that some things randomly
work, others don't. Will it trigger the screenedge, probably yes, but
will it show the highlight: properly no.

By removing the functionality we finally acknowledge that this mode is
not maintained and has not been maintained for years and that we do not
intend to support it better in future. Over the years we tried to make
it more and more hidden: it's disabled for Intel GPUs, because it used
to crash KWin. It's marked as an "expert" option, etc.

It's clearly something we tried to hide from the user that it exists.

For Wayland the whole unredirect infrastructure doesn't make sense
either. There is no such thing as "unredirecting". We might make use
of passing buffers directly to the underlying stack, but that will be
done automatically when we know it can be done, not by some magic is
this a window of specific size.

Test Plan:
Compiles, cannot really test as I am an Intel user who never
had that working.

445335ba5f Merge signal connections for AbstractClient in Workspace
Summary:
Have one dedicated method which performs the connection for both
Client and ShellClient. This fixes the desktopPresenceChanged signal
not being passed to the effects.

Note that not all signals are merged. Most signals setup for Client
don't make sense for ShellClient as ShellClient cannot block composite
or unredirect.

Test Plan:
Test case added for ShellClient to ensure that the signal
is correctly invoked on the ShellClient, Workspace and EffectsHandler.

4560f8d253 Handle ShellClient::windowShown in Workspace
Summary:
When a ShellClient gets unmapped and mapped again the signal windowShown
gets emitted. We need to handle this in Workspace to ensure the window
is in the proper layer and gets focus.

This fixes applications like KRunner/Yakuake not having focus on a
second show. Unfortunately it also brings back the problem that
notifiations steal focus (this needs to be fixed by passing a proper
window type to a notification).

d49fba5d30 [libkwinxrenderutils] Clean up static blend picture before going down
Summary:
The method xRenderBlendPicture created a static XRenderPicture on
first usage. To cleanup a XRenderPicture an xcb_connection_t* is needed.
As it's static the cleanup happens on exit handler and at that time Qt
already destroyed the xcb_connection_t*. With a certain chance this will
crash.

To expose the problem a Q_ASSERT(qApp) is added in the destructor of
XRenderPicture. Using xrenderBlendPicture() will hit this assert on
application exit. This is demonstrated by the added auto test.

The actual fix to the problem is moving the static variable out of
the method and introduce a global cleanup method just like the init
method. This is now called from Workspace dtor, so before application
goes down.

ea4de85553 Destroy static Client helper window before application goes down
Summary:
Client uses a static Xcb::Window helper. This so far didn't get
explicitly destroyed, so the application finalize cleaned it up.
To destroy the window the xcb_connection_t* is used which the
QGuiApplication already destroyed.

This change ensures that the window gets destroyed before the xcb
connection gets destroyed.

In addition an assert is added to KWin::connection() to ensure that
we still have the QGuiApplication::instance() when it's invoked.
This way we'll notice if we have more cases where we call into xcb
after the application went down.

59e3b96812 Add a Toplevel *Workspace::findInternal(QWindow *w) const
This method is able to match a QWindow created by KWin to a Toplevel.
On X11 by matching winId against Unmanaged, on Wayland by matching
to internal window of ShellClient.

Finding the internal window is a commonly needed feature to e.g.
elevate the TabBox window.

c044ad98be Split out pointer related handling from InputRedirection
All pointer related code is moved into a new class called
PointerInputRedirection.

The main idea is to simplify the code and make it easier to maintain.
Therefore also a few changes in the setup were performed:
* before init() is called, no processing is performed
* init() is only called on Wayland and after Workspace is created
* init property is set to false once Workspace or WaylandServer is
  destroyed

Thus code can operate on the following assumptions:
* Workspace is valid
* WaylandServer is valid
* ScreenLocker integration is used

The various checks whether there is a waylandServer() and whether
there is a seat are no longer needed.

Some of the checks have been reordered to be faster in the most common
use case of using libinput. E.g. whether warping is supported is first
evaluated by the variable bound to whether we have libinput and only if
that is false the backend is checked.

The new class doesn't have signals but invokes the signals provided
by InputRedirection. I didn't want to add new signals as I consider
them as not needed. The areas in KWin needing those signals should
be ported to InputEventFilters.

20a9a2a247 Introduce a --no-kactivities command line option
This change enables kactivities integration by default again on both
X11 and Wayland (as kactivities no longer blocks). As we have an
infrastructure to disable kactivities we can also make use of it and
offer a command line switch to disable kactivities. This might be
useful for using KWin outside of Plasma.
