6d20d19fec platforms/x11: Always set swap interval to 1
With the new compositing scheduling, we want the screen to be redrawn as
close as possible to the next vblank. Furthermore, compositing is no
longer driven by a timer. This change removes the NoSwapEncourage swap
strategy as it doesn't make sense now, in addition to that it just does
not work on Wayland.

ad5f8c5c59 Introduce RenderJournal
Currently, we estimate the expected render time purely based on the
latency policy.

The problem with doing so is that the real render time might be larger,
this can result in frame drops.

In order to avoid frame drops, we need to take into account previous
render times while estimating the next render time. For now, we just
measure how long it takes to record rendering commands on the CPU.

In the future, we might want consider using OpenGL timer queries for
measuring the real render time, but for now, it's good enough.

b8a70e62d5 Introduce RenderLoop
At the moment, our frame scheduling infrastructure is still heavily
based on Xinerama-style rendering. Specifically, we assume that painting
is driven by a single timer, etc.

This change introduces a new type - RenderLoop. Its main purpose is to
drive compositing on a specific output, or in case of X11, on the
overlay window.

With RenderLoop, compositing is synchronized to vblank events. It
exposes the last and the next estimated presentation timestamp. The
expected presentation timestamp can be used by effects to ensure that
animations are synchronized with the upcoming vblank event.

On Wayland, every outputs has its own render loop. On X11, per screen
rendering is not possible, therefore the platform exposes the render
loop for the overlay window. Ideally, the Scene has to expose the
RenderLoop, but as the first step towards better compositing scheduling
it's good as is for the time being.

The RenderLoop tries to minimize the latency by delaying compositing as
close as possible to the next vblank event. One tricky thing about it is
that if compositing is too close to the next vblank event, animations
may become a little bit choppy. However, increasing the latency reduces
the choppiness.

Given that, there is no any "silver bullet" solution for the choppiness
issue, a new option has been added in the Compositing KCM to specify the
amount of latency. By default, it's "Medium," but if a user is not
satisfied with the upstream default, they can tweak it.

b3e9c81953 [focuschain/task switcher] Add hidden option to govern repositioning minimized windows
Since some people apparently liked the old behavior of moving minimized

`MoveMinimizedWindowsToEndOfTabBoxFocusChain=true` in the `[TabBox]` group

The main advantage of SPDX license identifiers over the traditional

lot of boilerplate text.

In order to create this change, I ran licensedigger -r -c from the

ec5a0249e2 [x11] Hold a passive grab on buttons only when needed
Due to a bug in the XI2 protocol, clients have to reset scroll valuators
on XI_Enter because the scroll valuators might have changed while the
pointer was elsewhere. The XI_Enter event is usually sent when an input
device enters the window, but it can also be generated by a passive grab.

If an XI_Enter event has been generated by a passive grab, the client
should not reset scroll valuators. Unfortunately, there is no any
reliable way for the client to determine if an XI_Enter event has been
sent in response to a deactivated passive grab. A correct fix for the
scroll issues in GTK apps would involve changes in the XI2 protocol.

As a work around, we can hold a passive grab only if the current mouse
wheel action is either "Activate and scroll" or "Activate, raise, and
scroll."

b3a19f9e5b Remove vsync detection and configurability
Summary:
Selecting not to vsync does not make sense for an X11 compositor. In the end
we want clients to be able to present async if they want to but the compositor
is supposed to send swaps with vsync to the XServer in order to not generate
tearing artifacts.

There was also a detection logic which did some questionable things in case
vsync was not available. I don't think this is necessary at all since we can
just always run a timer to present with or without vsync.

Summary:
It doesn't belong with advanced compositing settings as it's quite user

In the current form all compositing is still completely reinitiliased

Test Plan:
Moved new slider, minimised a window.
It still behaved as expected.

62a7db7028 Use nullptr everywhere
Summary:
Because KWin is a very old project, we use three kinds of null pointer
literals: 0, NULL, and nullptr. Since C++11, it's recommended to use
nullptr keyword.

This change converts all usages of 0 and NULL literal to nullptr. Even
though it breaks git history, we need to do it in order to have consistent
code as well to ease code reviews (it's very tempting for some people to
add unrelated changes to their patches, e.g. converting NULL to nullptr).

Test Plan: Compiles.

684b4b635e Use more traditional doxygen style
Summary:
So far we were following a bit unique and rare doxygen comment style:

    /**
     * Contents of the comment.
     **/

Doxygen comments with this style look balanced and neat, but many people
that contribute to KWin don't follow this style. Instead, they prefer
more traditional doxygen comment style, i.e.

    /**
     * Contents of the comment.
     */

Reviewing such changes has been a bit frustrating for me (so selfish!)
and for other contributors.

This change switches doxygen comment style in KWin to a more traditional
style. The main reason for doing this is to make code review process easier
for new contributors as well us.

8af2fa73dc Run clang-tidy with modernize-use-override check
Summary:
Currently code base of kwin can be viewed as two pieces. One is very
ancient, and the other one is more modern, which uses new C++ features.

The main problem with the ancient code is that it was written before
C++11 era. So, no override or final keywords, lambdas, etc.

Quite recently, KDE compiler settings were changed to show a warning if
a virtual method has missing override keyword. As you might have already
guessed, this fired back at us because of that ancient code. We had
about 500 new compiler warnings.

A "solution" was proposed to that problem - disable -Wno-suggest-override
and the other similar warning for clang. It's hard to call a solution
because those warnings are disabled not only for the old code, but also
for new. This is not what we want!

The main argument for not actually fixing the problem was that git
history will be screwed as well because of human factor. While good git
history is a very important thing, we should not go crazy about it and
block every change that somehow alters git history. git blame allows to
specify starting revision for a reason.

The other argument (human factor) can be easily solved by using tools
such as clang-tidy. clang-tidy is a clang-based linter for C++. It can
be used for various things, e.g. fixing coding style(e.g. add missing
braces to if statements, readability-braces-around-statements check),
or in our case add missing override keywords.

Test Plan: Compiles.

This hack seems to be deactivated by default nowadays and I did not find an
option in the KCMs to activate it. Git blame shows some last commits from

Also even if it would be enabled, in light of Wayland we don't want some
roque XWayland client go bonkers via this hack.

future changes to the fullscreen handling overall.

4fa41165d1 Move XRandR event filter into XRandRScreens

The code in events.cpp was problematic as it was called in a Wayland

17e0bad922 Drop OpenGL based color correction from KWin
Summary:
The feature has always been considered experimental. Unfortunately it is
completely unmaintained and hasn't seen any commits in years. It
requires kolor-manager to function, but that has not seen a release
based on frameworks yet. This makes it difficult to maintain. In fact I
have never been able from the introduction till now to setup a color
corrected system. One needs kolor-manager and oyranos and especially the
latter is hardly available on any linux distribution (e.g. not on the
Debian/Ubuntu systems).

Due to being unmaintained color correction in KWin did not keep up with
recent changes. Neither did it see any updates during the xlib->xcb
port, nor during the Wayland port. Especially the Wayland port with the
rendering changes make it unlikely to function correctly. E.g. Wayland
introduced a proper per-screen rendering, while color correction did a
"fake" per screen rendering. How that is going to work in combination is
something nobody ever tried. Now after the introduction of proper
per-screen rendering the solution would be to port color correction to
the new api, but that never happened.

Color correction also modified the shaders, but a newer shader API got
introduced some time ago. Whether the color correction shader support
that or not, is unknown to me. Also which shader language versions are
supported. I know it was based on 3d texture support, which back on
introduction was partially lacking in OpenGL ES. Nowadays that changed,
but color correction didn't update.

Last but not least it is completely X11 based and there is no work on
how to make it work with Wayland.

Given all the problems, especially the fact that it is unmaintained and
cannot be setup on my system, means to me that the only solution is to
remove it.

I'm open to having it reintroduced in future, but only if the
availability on Linux distributions gets addressed before. As long as
major linux distributions do not ship this feature, it should not be in
KWin. Given that I must say that it was a mistake to add it in the first
place and I need to point out that I was against the merge back then.

853020336f Introduce a config option whether applications are allowed to block compositing
Summary:
From feedback we got it seems that not all users agree to games and
other applications blocking compositing. Some users prefer to have
compositing always on even if this gives a small performance penelity.

This change introduces a dedicated config option to specify whether games
are allowed to block compositing. By default this option is enabled.

The setting can be overwritten with a window specific rule. So usecases
like all windows except this very specific one are supported.

In the user interface the config option is shown where previously the
unredirect fullscreen option was shown.

Test Plan:
Run a game which should block compositing, verified it blocks.
Changed the setting, run the game again, verified it doesn't block. And
once more for with allowing to block.

996ee34e14 Remove the unredirect fullscreen windows functionality
Summary:
Rational: unredirect fullscreen windows is a weird beast. It's intended
to make fullscreen windows "faster" by not compositing that screen. But
that doesn't really work as KWin jumps out of that condition pretty
quickly. E.g. whenever a tooltip window is shown. KWin itself has a
better functionality by supporting to block compositing completely.
The complete code was full of hacks around it to try to ensure that
things don't break.

Overall unredirect fullscreen has always been the odd one. We had it
because a compositor needs to have it, but it never got truly integrated.
E.g. effects don't interact with it properly so that some things randomly
work, others don't. Will it trigger the screenedge, probably yes, but
will it show the highlight: properly no.

By removing the functionality we finally acknowledge that this mode is
not maintained and has not been maintained for years and that we do not
intend to support it better in future. Over the years we tried to make
it more and more hidden: it's disabled for Intel GPUs, because it used
to crash KWin. It's marked as an "expert" option, etc.

It's clearly something we tried to hide from the user that it exists.

For Wayland the whole unredirect infrastructure doesn't make sense
either. There is no such thing as "unredirecting". We might make use
of passing buffers directly to the underlying stack, but that will be
done automatically when we know it can be done, not by some magic is
this a window of specific size.

Test Plan:
Compiles, cannot really test as I am an Intel user who never
had that working.

In the Wayland world we need to have a compositor. This means we have to
enforce that the compositor is running. If the setup fails we have to
quit, because it doesn't make any sense any more to be running.

A new method requiresCompositing() is added to the Application. If it
returns true the useCompositing option will always return true and the
unredirect fullscreen option will always return false. That way
compositing is enforced at startup and cannot end by unredirecting.

In addition this method is checked if actions are performed which would
suspend compositing. E.g. the shortcut to toggle compositing. Restarting
the compositor is still possible in order to change the selected
compositing backend without a restart. But if it fails KWin will quit.

requires direct rendering. On IvyBridge QtQuick is crashing if the

The test app basically whitelisted most drivers anyway, the only
drivers which were problematic are the proprietary Catalyst drivers.
It that's still a problem we can also disable OpenGL compositing on
those drivers through the recommendation in the GLPlatform.

This also means that the KWIN_DIRECT_GL variable is no longer useful.

This should allow better handling in the Factories.

e2583e679f No longer pass changed mask from KWin core to the decorations
The changed mask is going to be replaced by more specific signals so
we don't need to calculate the change mask in KWin core anymore.

We still need to call reset in the decoration plugin to check whether
a new decoration library needs to be loaded.

40588e05ea Clean up the includes in kwin/options.(h/cpp)
Used to include quite a bit no longer needed. In order to get rid of
the utils.h inclusion one enum is moved to options (where it actually
belongs to).

edb074cbc2 Split out screen handling from Workspace into own class Screens
Following the approaches of other split out functionality Screens is a
singleton class created by Workspace.

The class takes over the responsibility for:
* screenChanged signal delayed by timer
* number of screens
* geometry of given screen
* active screen
* config option for active screen follows mouse

The class contains a small abstraction layer and has a concrete subclass
wrapping around QDesktopWidget, but the idea is to go more low level and
interact with XRandR directly to get more detailed information.

All over KWin the usage from QDesktopWidget is ported over to the new
Screens class.
