At the moment, our frame scheduling infrastructure is still heavily
based on Xinerama-style rendering. Specifically, we assume that painting
is driven by a single timer, etc.
This change introduces a new type - RenderLoop. Its main purpose is to
drive compositing on a specific output, or in case of X11, on the
overlay window.
With RenderLoop, compositing is synchronized to vblank events. It
exposes the last and the next estimated presentation timestamp. The
expected presentation timestamp can be used by effects to ensure that
animations are synchronized with the upcoming vblank event.
On Wayland, every outputs has its own render loop. On X11, per screen
rendering is not possible, therefore the platform exposes the render
loop for the overlay window. Ideally, the Scene has to expose the
RenderLoop, but as the first step towards better compositing scheduling
it's good as is for the time being.
The RenderLoop tries to minimize the latency by delaying compositing as
close as possible to the next vblank event. One tricky thing about it is
that if compositing is too close to the next vblank event, animations
may become a little bit choppy. However, increasing the latency reduces
the choppiness.
Given that, there is no any "silver bullet" solution for the choppiness
issue, a new option has been added in the Compositing KCM to specify the
amount of latency. By default, it's "Medium," but if a user is not
satisfied with the upstream default, they can tweak it.
The main advantage of SPDX license identifiers over the traditional
license headers is that it's more difficult to overlook inappropriate
licenses for kwin, for example GPL 3. We also don't have to copy a
lot of boilerplate text.
In order to create this change, I ran licensedigger -r -c from the
toplevel source directory.
If the Xwayland process crashes, it will bring down the entire session
together with itself. Obviously, we don't want that. At least, Wayland
clients should survive the crash.
This change refactors relevant X11 parts to handle Xwayland crashes in a
less fatal way.
In order to handle Xwayland crashes better, a pair of start() and stop()
methods had been introduced in the Xwayland class to allow starting and
stopping the Xwayland process at any moment.
If we detect that the Xwayland process has crashed, we will immediately
stop the Xwayland server, which in its turn will deactivate the socket
notifier and destroy all connected X11 clients. Unfortunately, a couple
of subtle changes in X11Client::releaseWindow() and Unmanaged::release()
had to be made to ensure that we are left with a valid state after the
Xwayland server has been stopped.
Currently in order to load an Xcursor theme, kwin uses libwayland api,
which looks really awkward because of the way how the compositor talks
to itself via the internal connection.
The main motivation behind this change is to limit the usage of kwayland
client api in kwin.
Summary:
When a plasma session quits, the order of plasmashell and clients quitting is undetermined.
This looks bad as our desktop background disappears quite early. Rather than changing the real order, we can have kwin reference the last pixmap of any desktop and hold on to it.
Lasting till the compositor quits means it stays on the X frontbuffer till X quits and the experience is seamless.

Currently kwin opens a second ICE connection to ksmserver in order to
tell the state of kwin's whether we're logging out and saving clients or
not.
This requires that kwin launches after ksmserver to have the connection
which is a dependency I want to break.
Practically this code is already ksmserver specific as it relies on some
custom code that sends the first saveState request to kwin first.
Instead we can replace it with a bespoke IPC over DBus and siplify the
code both end. This will allow several other future enhancements that we
want with regards to handling the session state, as well as make an
effort platform agnostic session management, as well as cleaning up some
complex code.

Doxygen comments with this style look balanced and neat, but many people

more traditional doxygen comment style, i.e.
/**

Reviewing such changes has been a bit frustrating for me (so selfish!)

This change switches doxygen comment style in KWin to a more traditional

Summary:
This change adds global touchpad swipe gestures to the
GlobalShortcutsManager and hooks up the swipe gestures as defined at the
Plasma Affenfels sprint:
* swipe up: Desktop Grid
* swipe down: Present Windows
* swipe left: previous virtual desktop
* swipe right: next virtual desktop
The main work is handled by two new classes: SwipeGesture and
GestureRecognizer. This is implemented in a way that it can be extended
to also recognize touch screen gestures and pinch gestures.
The SwipeGesture defines what is required for the gesture to trigger.
Currently this includes the minimum and maximum number of fingers
participating in the gesture and the direction. The gesture gets
registered in the GestureRecognizer.
The events for the gesture are fed into the GestureRecognizer. It
evaluates which gestures could trigger and tracks them for every update
of the gesture. In the process of the gesture tracking the
GestureRecognizer emits signals on the Gesture:
* started: when the Gesture gets considered for a sequence
* cancelled: the Gesture no longer matches the sequence
* triggered: the sequence ended and the Gesture still matches
The remaining changes are related to hook up the existing shortcut
framework with the new touchpad gestures. The GlobalShortcutManager
gained support for it, InputRedirection and EffectsHandler offer methods
to register a QAction. VirtualDesktopManager, PresentWindows and
DesktopGrid are adjusted to support the gesture.

This change drops KWin::display and removes the include to QX11Info from
kwinglobals.h. And the libraries no longer need to link X11Extras. Due
to that removal a few seeming unrelated changes are required to add the
include where needed and linkage to X11Extras.
The biggest change is to x11 platform plugin which still needs the
display and caches it in the Platform and passes it to various places in
a way that the code doesn't need to be adjusted.

There are several effects (screenshot, zoom) which need access to the
cursor image and cursor hotspot. So far these effects used X11
unconditionally to get the cursor which obviously does not work on
Wayland.
This change adds a new class PlatformCursorImage to kwinglobals which
wraps what a cursor is (image and hotspot) and adds a new virtual method
to Platform to provide such a PlatformCursorImage. By default it's the
cursor image the Platform tracks. On X11/standalone platform this new
virtual method is overriden and provides a PlatformCursorImage from X11
using the code previously used in screenshot effect.
Screenshot effect and zoom are adjusted to use the new API instead of
X11.
Test Plan:
Zoom effect tested on Wayland, now gets the proper cursor icon.

To destroy the window the xcb_connection_t* is used which the

In addition an assert is added to KWin::connection() to ensure that
we still have the QGuiApplication::instance() when it's invoked.
This way we'll notice if we have more cases where we call into xcb

Internally QX11Info::display() calls into QPA native interface and

Unfortunately this key also exists in other QPA plugins, e.g. in
QtWayland.
Calling without a check on platform results on wayland qpa in
wl_display* being casted into Display*.

KWin::connection() uses the property to resolve the value instead of
using QX11Info. In practice this doesn't change anything at the moment,
but allows kwin_wayland to provide an xcb connection without depending
on QX11Info.
As we cannot make xcb_connection_t* available as a metatype, the
property's type is set to void*.
KWin::rootWindow() uses the property to resolve the value instead of
using QX11Info. In practice this doesn't change anything at the moment,
but allows kwin_wayland to provide a root window without depending on
QX11Info.
The porting to Qt5 broke the timestamp handling in many areas. A deeper
look into Qt's xcb plugin shows that the appTime handling is not
sufficient for KWin's need. E.g. the time is only updated in response to
a property notify event if it's for a Qt created window, which is hardly
ever the case in KWin. Another example is that key press/release events
never updated the appTime.
As the functionality in Qt is rather trivial we can do the timestamp
handling ourselves. We filter all events anyway and it is slightly faster
as we don't have to go through the QPA interface any more.

All of kwin except the main function goes into a new (private) library
called kwin. Two new kdeinit_executables are created:
* kwin_x11
* kwin_wayland
Both only use a dedicated main_x11.cpp and main_wayland.cpp with the
main function and a KWin::Application subclass and linking the new
kwin library.
The main idea behind this is to be able to perform more sane sanity
checks. E.g. on Wayland we don't need to first test whether we can
create an X11 connection. Instead we should abort if we cannot connect
to the Wayland display. Also the multi-head checks are not needed on
Wayland, etc. etc. As most of that code is in the main function to
simplify it's better to split.
This will also make it easier to diverge more easily in future. The
Wayland variant can introduce more suited command line arguments for
example. This already started by having the --replace option only
available in X11 variant. The Wayland backend is still a window manager,
but doesn't claim the manager selection.
KWin already has a de facto OpenGL 2 dependency through QML. Combined
with the fact that the OpenGL 1 backend is basically unmaintained and
also unused, it's better to remove it for the new major release.
This change includes:
* Removal of cmake option KWIN_BUILD_OPENGL_1_COMPOSITING
* Removal of KWIN_HAVE_OPENGL_1 compile option and all code
ifdef'ed with it (partially removal of if-else constructs)
* Removal of CompositingType::OpenGL1Compositing (flags are kept
as a core flag should get introduced)
* Driver recommendation for OpenGL1Compositing changed to XRender
(should be evaluated whether the drivers can provide GL2)
* Removal of configuration option "GLLegacy"
* Removal of fooMatrix function in kwinglutils
* Removal of ARBBlurShader
* Removal of legacy code path in GLVertexBuffer
* Removal of GLShaderManager::disable
* if-blocks with ShaderManager::instance()->isValid() removed

This compositor uses only the QPainter API to perform rendering. The
window's X Pixmap is mapped to a QImage using XShm. As rendering backend
a QImage is used.
The new compositing type "QPainterCompositing" is introduced. Effects
need to be adjusted to explicitly check the compositing type and no
longer assume the compositing type is XRender if it's not OpenGL.
This compositor can be selected with using "Q" as the value for
KWIN_COMPOSE env variable or setting the config value to "QPainter".
The GUI is not yet adjusted to select this compositor.
The QPainter scene provides currently the following features:
* 2D transformations (translation and scalation)
* opacity modifications
* rendering of decorations (new PaintRedirector sub class)
* rendering of shadows
* rendering of effect frames
* rendering to a Wayland surface
The following features are currently not provided:
* saturation changes
* brightness changes
* 3D transformations
* rendering to X Overlay window
* offscreen rendering (e.g. needed for screen shot effect)
* custom rendering in the effects to the current back buffer

Instead we generate an export header for kdeinit_kwin and use it
to declare the KWIN_EXPORT. With this change our libs don't include
any KDE4Support headers any more. One step closer to no KDE4Support.
Qt 5 only supports raster which means our pixmaps are always non native,
so we don't need the Extension information any more and can drop all
special code handling for mapping a native QPixmap to an X11 pixmap.
The define KWIN_SINGLETON adds to a class definition:
public:
static Foo *create(QObject *parent = 0);
static Foo *self() { return s_self; }
protected:
explicit Foo(QObject *parent = 0);
private:
static Foo *s_self;
There is an additional define KWIN_SINGLETON_VARIABLE to set a different
name than s_self.
The define KWIN_SINGLETON_FACTORY can be used to generate the create
method. It expands to:
Foo *Foo::s_self = 0;
Foo *Foo::create(QObject *parent)
{
Q_ASSERT(!s_self);
s_self = new Foo(parent);
return s_self;
}
In addition there are defines to again set a different variable name and
to create an object of another inheriting class.
All the classes currently using this pattern are adjusted to use these
new defines. In a few places the name was adjusted. E.g. in Compositor
the factory method was called createCompositor instead of create.

- The setting is ignored, the decoration always gets a "true" for it
- moving a maximized window requires breaking a "strong" snap (1/16 of screen height - unless you use quick maximization)
- all snapping is done towards the client, not the frame
- QuickTileMode is exported to the decoration (just as the maximizeMode) so that it can fix the bordersize alongside that.
displayWidth/Height() are rewritten on top of XCB. rootWindow() and
xTime() return xcb datatype instead of XLib datatype.
Unfortunatelly it's not possible to cache the result for displayWidth and
Height, but getting the default screen is cached and provided in another

The extension handling is removed from kwinglobals and moved into the
xcbutils in KWin core in namespace KWin::Xcb. The motivation for this
change is that the Extensions are only used in KWin core and are marked
as internal. So there is no need to have them in the library.
What remains in Extensions are the non-native pixmaps. This will be
removed once we are on Qt 5 as QPixmap can no longer reference an XPixmap.
The remaining code in kwinglobals also still initialize the XLib versions
of extensions emitting events. It seems like there are no XEvents emitted
if not done so even if the extension is correctly initialized with xcb.
This needs to be removed once the event handling is ported over to xcb.

The Egl backend is decoupled from the OpenGL ES build option which makes
it possible to use it as a replacement for glx.
To make this possible a new build flag is added when egl is available at
compile time and any egl specific code is now ifdefed with this flag
instead of the gles flag. In addition at runtime a windowing system enum
value is passed to the various detect methods to have egl/glx specific
detection for e.g. function pointer resolving.
By default egl is used if compiled with OpenGL ES, otherwise glx is used.
But in the non-gles case the windowing system can be selected through the
new environment variable KWIN_OPENGL_INTERFACE. Setting this variable to
"egl" the EglOnXBackend is used.
