The main motivation behind this change is to share rendering code
between windows and the cursor, specifically the Item class which
requires a Scene.
Note that Scene subclasses are responsible for issuing
ItemRenderer::renderItem() calls. The main reason for that is the
current architecture of the effects system, specifically we need to call
some effects hooks before and after painting a window.
This is needed to establish explicit connection between an item and the
scene it belongs to. For now, the scene must be known at the item
construction time. Perhaps it can be improved in the future by items
inheriting their scene from the parent item, but the scene would need to
be refactored more so there's a root item or something like that.
Due to being a compositor, kwin has to conform to some certain
interfaces. It means a lot of virtual functions and function tables to
integrate with C APIs. Naturally, we not always want to use every
argument in such functions.
Since we get -Wunused-parameter from -Wall, we have to plumb those
unused arguments in order to suppress compiler warnings at the moment.
However, I don't think that extra work is worth it. We cannot change or
alter prototypes in any way to fix the warning the desired way. Q_UNUSED
and similar macros are not good indicators of whether an argument is
used too, we tend to overlook putting or removing those macros. I've
also noticed that Q_UNUSED are not used to guide us with the removal no
longer needed parameters.
Therefore, I think it's worth adding -Wno-unused-parameter compiler
option to stop the compiler producing warnings about unused parameters.
It changes nothing except that we don't need to put Q_UNUSED anymore,
which can be really cumbersome sometimes. Note that it doesn't affect
unused variables, you'll still get a -Wunused-variable compiler warning
if a variable is unused.
testDbusInterface fails with Qt 6 build because QCOMPARE detects the
type difference between QString and QByteArray.
Since these properties being byte arrays has caused reasonable amount of
discomfort, let's make them QStrings. It will fix the test and make some
scripted effect code more cleaner.
With fractional scaling integer based logical geometry may not match
device pixels. Once we have a floating point base we can fix that. This
also is
important for our X11 scale override, with a scale of 2 we could
get logical sizes with halves.
We already have all input being floating point, this doubles down on it
for all remaining geometry.
- Outputs remain integer to ensure that any screen on the right remains
aligned.
- Placement also remains integer based for now.
- Repainting is untouched as we always expand outwards
(QRectF::toAdjustedRect().
- Decoration is untouched for now
- Rules are integer in the config, but floating in the adjusting/API
This should also be fine.
At some point we'll add a method to snap to the device pixel
grid. Effectively `round(value * dpr) / dpr` though right now things
mostly work.
This also gets rid of a lot of hacks for QRect right and bottom which
are very
confusing.
Parts to watch out in the port are:
QRectF::contains now includes edges
QRectF::right and bottom are now sane so previous hacks have to be
removed
QRectF(QPoint, QPoint) behaves differently for the same reason
QRectF::center too
In test results some adjusted values which are the result of
QRect.center because using QRectF's center should behave the same to the
user.
Effects may perform cleanup when a deleted window is removed. If that
happens and the SceneWindow is accessed, kwin may crash.
The Scene processes Workspace::deletedRemoved() before effects.
In order to fix dereferencing null pointer, this change makes the Window
destroy its associated SceneWindow.
The .clang-format file is based on the one in ECM except the following
style options:
- AlwaysBreakBeforeMultilineStrings
- BinPackArguments
- BinPackParameters
- ColumnLimit
- BreakBeforeBraces
- KeepEmptyLinesAtTheStartOfBlocks
On Wayland, a window can have subsurfaces. The spec doesn't require the
main surface and its sub-surfaces to have the same scale factor.
Given that Toplevel::bufferScale() makes no sense with Wayland windows,
this change drops it to make code more reasonable and to prevent people
from using Toplevel::bufferScale().
This decouples the management of Shadow from the scene window and allows
multiple items share the same Shadow.
Currently, kwin has a single scene graph, but it makes sense to create a
scene graph per output as they could have different layers, etc. This
would also allow QtQuick share more textures with kwin, which is worth
doing for optimization purposes in the future.
toplevel.h is included in many places. Changing virtualdesktops.h may
trigger rebuild of all kwin.
With this change, only cpp files that use virtualdesktops.h will need to
be recompiled.
The main idea behind _NET_WM_FRAME_OVERLAP is to extend the borders of
the server-side decoration so the application can draw on top of it. It
was inspired by similar feature in Windows.
However, _NET_WM_FRAME_OVERLAP is basically unused. Neither GTK nor Qt
support it and I have never seen any application that uses it.
At the moment, kwin is the only compositing window manager that supports
_NET_WM_FRAME_OVERLAP. Neither mutter nor compiz nor compton and so on
support it.
Since _NET_WM_FRAME_OVERLAP is practically unused, there's no point for
keeping supporting it.
This change shouldn't affect any existing app as _NET_WM_FRAME_OVERLAP
atom is not listed in _NET_SUPPORTED.
Currently, the implementation of the DecoratedClient and the decoration
renderer are strongly coupled. This poses a problem with the item based
design as the ultimate goal is to have scene items construct paint nodes
which are then fed to the renderer. The DecorationItem has to have
control over the decoration texture. Another issue is that the scene
cannot smoothly cross-fade between two window states if the decoration
is removed, e.g. from fullscreen mode to normal and vice versa.
This change moves the decoration renderer to the decoration item. With
the introduction of a generic scene texture atlas, we hope to get rid of
the decoration renderer altogether.
The Toplevel::clientContentPos() function is needed to map the surface
local coordinates to the global coordinates. But its name is highly
confusing as there's already a function with a similar name. This change
introduces a helper with a better name to fix the readability issue.
This makes the implementation of the buffer geometry consistent with the
frame geometry and the client geometry and removes a virtual method call
from a few hot paths.
On X11, the lockscreen greeter is an override-redirect window so the
scale and the glide effect ignore it.
On Wayland, the lockscreen greeter is a regular window so both effects
try to animate it upon the screen being unlocked, which looks bad.
Currently, the Workspace has no any api to constrain one window above
another. This results in having hacks such as keepDeletedTransientAbove()
This change introduces a basic api to constrain a given window above
another. It can be used for ensuring that transient windows are placed
above their parents. It also can be used for stacking the outline window
below the move-resize window.
Internal windows may also have transient parents. Because of that, this
change makes the workspace add internal clients to the stacking order by
default. The good thing about it is that it allows us unify some input
related code for "external" windows and internal windows.
Once in a while, we receive complaints from other fellow KDE developers
about the file organization of kwin. This change addresses some of those
complaints by moving all of source code in a separate directory, src/,
thus making the project structure more traditional. Things such as tests
are kept in their own toplevel directories.
This change may wreak havoc on merge requests that add new files to kwin,
but if a patch modifies an already existing file, git should be smart
enough to figure out that the file has been relocated.
We may potentially split the src/ directory further to make navigating
the source code easier, but hopefully this is good enough already.
