Summary:
When using the natural layout algorithm with the fill-gaps option, a small
error (less than one) is introduced in windows' aspect ratio each time they are
enlarged due to floating-point roundoff.
Currently, the algorithm computes the width and height enlargement factors and
then attempts to enlarge in each of the four possible directions, repeating
until it can't enlarge any windows any further. Hence, this aspect ratio error
can be multiplied by up to four. Especially for small, long, and narrow
windows, this can result in a total error of greater than one by the end of
that loop iteration. If this occurs, on subsequent iterations the height
enlargement factor might then be computed as negative violating some of the
core assumptions of the algorithm and resulting in the loop iterating endlessly
until one of the window dimensions overflows, freezing the program for up to
several minutes.
To fix this, the height enlargement factor should be re-computed based on the
new width each time the window is enlarged, ensuring the error introduced in
the aspect ratio never exceeds one.

Test Plan:
The most reliable way to reproduce the freeze seems to be to activate the
desktop-grid effect while a tool-tip window is fading in.
Ensure desktop-grid is configured to use present windows, and that present
windows is configured to use the natural layout algorithm with the fill gaps
option selected.
The freeze is still intermittent, but using this method should be able to be
triggered within about 10 tries without this fix.
After applying the fix, the freeze has never been observed.

Such an option would be useful for people that are used to watch videos
in the fullscreen mode.
By default, we still dim fullscreen windows because watching videos in
fullscreen mode is not the only one use-case. One could have a text
editor in fullscreen mode on one screen and Konsole on another screen.
In that case, it would be desired to dim the text editor if the latter
is active. Also, because we don't have stats of how the fullscreen mode
is used by KDE Plasma users.

The Dim Inactive effect expects that the windowClosed signal always
proceeds the windowDeleted signal. But in some cases that's not the case.
If a window gets destroyed before becoming ready for painting, only
the windowDeleted signal will be emitted. In addition to that, KWin will
activate that window, which means we'll probably start a transition for
it.
Because this effect cannot terminate active transitions for such
windows, KWin can crash in postPaintScreen.
This change addresses the crash in postPaintScreen by adding extra clean
up stuff in the windowDeleted slot to make sure that there are no
transitions for deleted windows.
The proper fix would be to not emit windowActivated signal for windows
that are not ready for painting.

If a modal window is closed and some alternative effect that animates
the disappearing of windows is enabled(e.g. the Glide effect, or the
Scale effect), the Dialog Parent effect can cause flickering of the
parent window because its animation duration doesn't match duration of
those alternative effects.
Also, if the Fade effect, the Glide effect, and the Scale effect are
disabled, the Dialog Parent will keep the parent window alive for no
good reason.
This change addresses that problem by adding keepAlive property to
`animate` function so scripted effects have more control over lifetime
of animated windows.
If both a modal window and its parent window are closed at the same time
(and there is no effect that animates the disappearing of windows), the
Dialog Parent will stop immediately(because windowDeleted will be
emitted right after windowClosed signal).
If both a modal window and its parent window are closed at the same time
(and there is effect that animates the disappearing of windows), the
Dialog Parent won't reference the latter window. Thus, it won't cause
flickering. I.e. it will "passively" animate parent windows.

With the Oxygen cursor theme, a visual glitch can appear in the
bottom-left corner of the cursor when the screen is zoomed in.
The reason for that is we're using GL_REPEAT for GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_S
and GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_T. So, when the linear filter samples neighboring
texels in the bottom, it can sample some texels from the top (because of
GL_REPEAT).
To fix that, we have to set the wrap mode to GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE.

The Show Paint effect is useful when debugging repaint regions issued by
effects. The only headache with it is necessity to enable/disable it.
Consider the following workflow:
* Do some change to an effect;
* Compile KWin (or the effect);
* Go to System Settings and enable the Show Paint effect;
* Test effect, check repaint regions, etc;
* Disable the Show Paint effect;
* Go to the step 1.
This workflow is really exhausting. Also, when testing repaints in a
nested compositor, things become quite messy.
Because purpose of this effect is to debug repaints (and because this
effect is not meant for daily usage), I think that's fine to change
how it's activated.
This patch improves the workflow by changing the way how this effect
gets activated. Instead of enabling/disabling it, one can just use a shortcut
to activate or deactivate the effect.

The problem was that effect relied on isManaged() to detect OSDs and notifications, that should be painted on top of the cube. On Wayland, the desktop window itself is not managed, which made it "sticky".
Instead we use isSpecialWindow() check to explicitly make notifications and OSDs sticky.
It still requires fixing Plasma::Dialog, since it does not set isSpecialWindow() flag correctly.

Bugs occurred because KWin was not very happy when windows were painted during CubeSlideEffect::paintScreen().
Another issue is that blur, although it was supposed to, did not work at all (haven't found appropriate bug on bugzilla).
As well as background contrast effect.
This patch does the following thing:
- Adopted WindowForceBlur / WindowForceBackgroundContrast logic from SlideEffect, instead of panels/stickyWindows QSets (those become useless anyway)
- Added shouldAnimate code, which determines whether a window should be animated with the cube (i.e. ordinary windows) or should stick (i.e. panels or pinned windows, if corresponding options are checked in the settings)
- It paints an additional non-transformed screen, on which it paints only "sticky" windows. This is done because otherwise KWin would apply blur not behind the OSD, but on the same place on moving cube face.
- (in addition) switched to new Qt5 connect syntax.

and moving mouse or by pressing a shortcut. It's not possible to use
the latter and then the former without changing config.

Summary:
The Dim Inactive effect sees the world a little bit differently.
m_activeWindow is currently active window that can be dimmed later on.
In most cases, it's the same as effects->activeWindow(). In rare cases,
it can be nullptr, even when effects->activeWindow() is not equal to nullptr
(e.g. when active window is a context menu popup).
canDimWindow is a helper that returns true if a given window should be
dimmed, otherwise it returns false. It has one special case: if a given
window is equal to m_activeWindow, return false. I.e. don't dim active
windows.
Currently, if user changes config of this effect, active window becomes
dimmed.
The reason for that is we hit that special case when deciding whether
effects->activeWindow() should be m_activeWindow.
This change addresses that problem by resetting m_activeWindow so we
don't hit that special case.

The existing Data struct has some serious problems:
(a) naming is not intuitive, SlideInterface uses more cleaner terminology
so let's use that (and because Wayland is the future);
(b) fadeInTime and fadeOutTime should be slideInDuration and slideOutDuration

them;
(c) mWindowsData should be m_animationsData because other parts of this

The Glide effect should not animate the Application Dashboard because
it's not an ordinary application or a dialog. Same applies to Kickoff,
panel popups, etc.
The most obvious solution would be to add "plasmashell plasmashell"
window class to the blacklist, but we still would like to animate some
of plasmashell's windows, for example, Empty Trash Bin confirmation
dialog (if the trash bin icon is on the desktop).
One could notice that the Empty Trash Bin confirmation dialog, Task
Manager Settings window, and other plasmashell's windows that we want
to animate have decorations. So, we can use that as a heuristic.

Currently, the fade effect animates both the appearing and the
disappearing of the logout screen. We don't want that because
the logout effect should do that.
D14582 addresses that problem by adding "ksmserver ksmserver" window
class to the blacklist of the fade effect. With that change, only the
logout effect animates the appearing of the logout screen. But there is
a problem... If user clicks the cancel button, the logout screen
instantaneously disappears, instead of smoothly fading out.
This change addresses that problem by adding "out" animation.

There are several reasons why I "re-wrote" the Glide effect:
* it doesn't work correctly because it suffers from undesired perspective distortions: {F5914378}
The worst part is that windows are distorted so much on multiple monitor setups that it's hard to say whether that's glide animation.
* window close animation is not quite intuitive: if the close button is
located at the top and I click it, I would expect that window is
rotated around the bottom edge, not the top; (IMHO)
* it's too much distracting when working on something for quite good
amount of time: e.g. when editing photos, which involves a big number
of different dialogs;
* there are issues with deletion of QTimeLine;
* windows are not gracefully released if some other effect grabs them;
* its code doesn't follow common coding style in KWin.
So, the "new" Glide effect is more subtle, it's possible to have
different rotation edges for window open/close animations, it doesn't
animate special windows(like audio volume feedback), the code is simpler
and readable. Yet, there are some issues with QTimeLine, which are
common to all effects in KWin anyway.

isModal now works with Deleted windows.

Currently, effects like Maximize, Slide Back have problems with setting
WindowForceBlurRole. They store previous state of WindowForceBlurRole.
This is wrong. Instead they should either ignore previous state of
WindowForceBlur or refcount forced role.
There's no need for refcounting right now. For example, if several effects
force blur or background contrast, they are most likely in a conflict.
Please notice that the Desktop Grid effect uses the Present Windows
effect only to calculate transformations.
Some other problems with the code that sets WindowForceBlurRole:
* Maximize effect stores previous state of WindowForceBlurRole only
for one window. It ignores the fact that there could be several
active maximize animations;
* Desktop Grid/Present Windows/Slide back don't clean after themselves.
So, after using those effects for good amount of times, memory usage
will bump.

The main problem was that inside the effect there was manualVerticalAngle,
which did not represent the actual rotation angle of the cube during the
animation, but used to calculate the position of the reflection. The actual
angle was calculated on-the-fly and was not exposed outside.
Brief description of what the code does:
- variables currentAngle and verticalCurrentAngle now always represent the
current position of the cube. They are updated when one uses the mouse and
inside the rotateCube() method, which is called in prePaintScreen().
- two queues, animations (used for Start / Stop / Left / Right) and
verticalAnimations (used for Up / Down) are used for scheduling the animations
if i.e. user presses several keys in a row. The code checks whether the last
animation has finished (and thus we need to start a new one) inside
prePaintScreen() and postPaintScreen()
- when the animation starts, code saves the starting position of the cube
inside startAngle, startFrontDesktop and verticalStartAngle variables, which
are used to calculate the actual cube position during the animation later.
This is done by startAnimation() and startVerticalAnimation(), which also
calculates the QTimeLine curves needed for animation

`QGuiApplication::primaryScreen()->logicalDotsPerInch()` sometimes reports incorrect scale value, for example 95.951 (or even lower) instead of 96.0 at 1x scale and this caused to simply darken blurred areas instead of noising them.
This patch sets a minimum 1x scale for the noise texture, because realistically we will never be below that.

Summary:
When you have two windows ontop of each other and you turn them
transparent, evidently you'll be able to see through them.
Not only does it look unpolished if the desktop window flashes through
your windows, it can pose a privacy risk as you'd be able to briefly
look through the lock screen.
This patch fades apps to black intead of to transparent. As this looks
weird for panels, so windows are also faded to opaque (if relevant) at
the same rate.

Summary:
KWin's window management powers are not as discoverable as they could be--particularly tiling, which by default has no visible UI and no keyboard shortcuts. Resolving this issue is highly relevant to {T6831}.
This patch re-assigns the {key Meta arrowkeys} shortcuts that are currently used for `move zoomed area` (which are pretty esoteric, infrequently-used actions), adding {key ctrl} to their shortcuts. This allows us to use their valuable {key Meta arrowkeys} for more useful and commonly-used window management actions:
- {key Meta Left}: quick tile window to the left
- {key Meta Right}: quick tile window to the right
- {key Meta Up}: quick-tile window to the top
- {key Meta Down}: quick-tile the window to the bottom
The patch also sets some default shortctuts for minimize and maximize:
- {key Meta PageDown}: minimize window
- {key Meta PageUp}: maximize/de-maximize the window

Summary:
Updated the old and outdated blur method to use the much more efficient dual kawase blur method.
Now with this we can do virtually infinite blur with very very little performance cost.
The dual kawase blur method is basically downscaling and upscaling an image, but combined with the kawase blur shader.

Comparison was done with the strongest blur setting in a VM running on an Intel i7-4790 and a GTX980

Without Xwayland KWin starts so fast that the creation of the EffectFrame
triggers a crash in the Wayland integration as the KWin internal
connection isn't fully setup.
To workaround this crash the creation of the EffectFrame is delayed till
the first usage. It doesn't make sense to try to fix the actual crash as
it would require to defer the creation of all Effects.

Several effects announce a support property atom on the root window. This
change forwards the KWin::Application's signal that the xcbConnection
changed to the EffectsHandler so that the effects can respond to it.
All effects which announce a support property connect to this new signal
and re-announce the property. In case the xcb connection died (future
XWayland crashing case) it is set to XCB_ATOM_NONE by that. In case the
xcb connection got created (future delayed XWayland startup) the atom is
set to the proper value.
In addition all usages of the support properties are guarded, so that no
nonesense actions are performed if the support property is XCB_ATOM_NONE.

The PresentWindows effect does not hide the window to close the selected
window. Instead it moves it outside the visible area. As this is a
"special" KWin window it is on top of the stacking order and needs to be
ignored in the slideback effect.

Summary:
This patch caputres from the framebuffer using the framebuffer's
geometry, factoring in scale. We then keep the current normal DPI
framebuffer causing it to downsample there.
This is good because:
- it keeps the code very simple
- it's a performance optimisation. Blurring on 4k is naturally more
expensive than at regular DPI. Downsampling keeps it the same - and you
can't see a difference given it's high DPI and you're going to blur it
anwyay.
- it keeps kernel sizes somewhat resolution independent so it will look
just as blurry across multiple screens.

This change adds global touchpad swipe gestures to the
GlobalShortcutsManager and hooks up the swipe gestures as defined at the
Plasma Affenfels sprint:
* swipe up: Desktop Grid
* swipe down: Present Windows
* swipe left: previous virtual desktop
* swipe right: next virtual desktop
The main work is handled by two new classes: SwipeGesture and
GestureRecognizer. This is implemented in a way that it can be extended
to also recognize touch screen gestures and pinch gestures.
The SwipeGesture defines what is required for the gesture to trigger.
Currently this includes the minimum and maximum number of fingers
participating in the gesture and the direction. The gesture gets
registered in the GestureRecognizer.
The events for the gesture are fed into the GestureRecognizer. It
evaluates which gestures could trigger and tracks them for every update
of the gesture. In the process of the gesture tracking the
GestureRecognizer emits signals on the Gesture:
* started: when the Gesture gets considered for a sequence
* cancelled: the Gesture no longer matches the sequence
* triggered: the sequence ended and the Gesture still matches
The remaining changes are related to hook up the existing shortcut
framework with the new touchpad gestures. The GlobalShortcutManager
gained support for it, InputRedirection and EffectsHandler offer methods
to register a QAction. VirtualDesktopManager, PresentWindows and
DesktopGrid are adjusted to support the gesture.

Typically after deselecting "Show caps" option, the associated options "Cap color" and "Display image on caps" are grayed out (triggered by signal). The bug was when Desktop Cube settings were closed and opened again then the options were not grayed out.
Succesfully compiled and tested by deselecting "Show caps" option in Desktop Cube settings, closing the settings window and opening it once again. The options "Cap color" and "Display image on caps" were then grayed out.

A second interactive selection mode gets added to select a position on
the screen. This is handled by the same input event filter as for the
window selection. Just that instead of returning a window, it returns a
QPoint.
This allows to pick a point on the screen which we need to screenshot
the screen under the mouse cursor and in future for color picking.
The screenshot effect provides two new dbus methods to (interactively)
select a screen or fullscreen. This allows spectacle to screenshot the
(full) screen with still having the user in control.

The result of this was that the fade out animation triggered when the
application quit showing all the already closed menus again.
This change implements a windowShown and windowHidden handler and
triggers the fadeIn/Out animation on it. If the window gets shown
again the existing fadeOut animation gets cancelled, so that it can run
again.
If a window gets closed for which a fade out animation has been run
already, it's not triggered again, thus ensuring that we don't see
zombie windows.

Summary:
The idea behind this mode is to support applications like spectacle
(see T4458). The calling application passes a file descriptor (created
through e.g. a pipe) and the screenshot effect writes the captured image
into that fd.
The advantage over the existing variant which writes to a file in the
/tmp directory is that this is peer-to-peer between the requesting
application and KWin. No other application can get to that image.
The change also includes setting SIGPIPE to ignore. It showed that when
the reading side already cancelled the read prior to KWin writing out
the image we get a SIGPIPE which results in application termination,
which is not what we want in case of a Wayland compositor. The sigpipe
can be ignored as Qt (and libpng) handles that error just fine at
runtime.

notification. This is helpful on the one hand that the user sees that
the screenshot got saved and from a security perspective that the user

The glide effect tried to not animate any window the SlidingPopups
effect animates. But it detected that in a very crude way. It announced
the KDE_SLIDE atom and checked for windows having that property set.
This has a few disadvantages:
* KWindowEffects::isEffectAvailable gets confused as an effect announces
support for SlidingPopups which doesn't provide SlidingPopups
* The approach can only work for X11 windows
* The approach causes X11 usage in the ctor
With this change the GlideEffect implements a slot for
EffectsHandler::windowDataChanged to detect that the SlidingPopupsEffect
grabbed the window. The X11 atom interaction is removed.

When windows get added some effects grab the window and want to be the
only one animating this window. For this the grab roles exists. An
effect being notified later on evaluates the grab state and does not
start the animation.
This process failed due to being dependent on the order the effects are
loaded. Window Added/Closed are signals emitted by EffectsHandler, thus
first come, first serve. The requested effect order does not play into
it.
Due to that it could happen that an Effect which should not animate,
started to animate as the grab was still there.
This change adds the possibility to be notified whenever the window data
changes. A new signal is added to EffectsHandler which is emitted
whenever the windowData changes. The interested effects connect to it
and cancel their (just started) animation for the window.
Adjusted effects are:
* ScaleIn
* Fade
* WobblyWindows
In case of WobblyWindows an additional logical error was fixed that the
animations were only run when an effect grabbed instead of the other way
around.

Desktop Grid has a feature that right or middle clicking a window toggles
the on all desktop state. If that is done for a desktop window, things
obviously start to fail.
KWin internally allows to change virtual desktop for all windows, even
for windows like the desktop or docks. Changing in KWin core is not a
solution.
Thus a special casing in desktop grid is added to disallow the selection
for desktop windows.

QSpinBox can't handle plural suffixes. Something previously done by
KIntSpinBox.
Using setSuffix(ki18np("pixel", "pixels")).toString() does nothing, as
at the time of conversion we don't know which one to use.
This patch uses KPluralHandlingSpinBox and correct ki18np.
Note, "new" dependency was already linked implicitly in other kwin, but
we need to add it for this KCM.
Test Plan:
Opened KCM (in English) set counter to 1 pixel and 2 pixels.
No longer had a big warning. Also appropriate number of s's appeared.

This replaces the implementation in the zoom effect which so far
directly interacted with xfixes to show/hide the cursor. This is now

There are several effects (screenshot, zoom) which need access to the
cursor image and cursor hotspot. So far these effects used X11
unconditionally to get the cursor which obviously does not work on
Wayland.
This change adds a new class PlatformCursorImage to kwinglobals which
wraps what a cursor is (image and hotspot) and adds a new virtual method
to Platform to provide such a PlatformCursorImage. By default it's the
cursor image the Platform tracks. On X11/standalone platform this new
virtual method is overriden and provides a PlatformCursorImage from X11
using the code previously used in screenshot effect.
Screenshot effect and zoom are adjusted to use the new API instead of
X11.
Test Plan:
Zoom effect tested on Wayland, now gets the proper cursor icon.
X11 functionality not yet tested.

next cycle. But for the fullscreen variants which save to a file the
Screenshot effect did try to take the shot directly.
This can be problematic as e.g. the OpenGL context might not be bound at
all. Also this makes it impossible to screenshot multiple screens
together in the Wayland case.
This change delays the DBus replies, schedules the geometry and takes
the screenshot in the next rendering pass. It does not fix the
multiscreen wayland problem yet.

included by having an hardcoded pixel offset. This of course breaks if
the shadow is larger than the hardcoded value.

Summary:
So far TabBox used highlight windows by passing window ids around through
an X property. This doesn't work on Wayland where we don't have window
ids for our TabBox and the Wayland windows.
This change introduces a new Effect::Feature for HighlightWindows which
the HighlightWindowsEffect provides. The EffectsHandlerImpl has a new
method to highlightWindows which it delegates to that effect if it is
loaded by invoking a new performFeature method.
The TabBoxHandler now passes the highlighting to the effects system
instead of updating the x11 property. Thus this works on Wayland and
at the same time improves the X11 side by no longer having to go through
the property protocol.
Test Plan: Verified that Alt+Tab highlights the windows on Wayland correctly.

Summary:
The new logout design doesn't want to have the vignetting. Thus the
logout effect itself doesn't make any sense any more. All that would
still be used is the logout blur which can also be provided by the
blur effect nowadays for fullscreen windows. As the new logout is a
fullscreen window it should use that one.
The logout effect did one more thing: it kept the vignetting and the
blur once the user selected logout. Now without the vignetting this
would be weird and again doesn't make much sense any more.
So overall I think it's better to just drop the logout effect and use
blur effect in normal way. Neat side advantage: it will also work on
Wayland out-of-the-box.

The new effect is based on the mouse click effect and uses the same
rendering code (this could be improved by merging them better).
Unlike mouse click there is no keyboard shortcut needed to activate:
as soon as the effect is loaded all touch points are visualized.
The visualization creates an animated circle for each touch down
position, motion and up position. The ids are tracked and each touch
id gets the same color. The first ten different touch ids get a
different color. As touch ids are stable the first finger will always
have the same color.

The Effect class is extended by three new virtual methods:
* touchDown
* touchMotion
* touchUp
The methods return a boolean value so that the events can be filtered
out. E.g. an effect which has also a mouse grab installed wants to
filter out all events, other effects don't need the events exclusively.
This is a difference to how e.g. keyboard and pointer events are handled.
But is more close to how KWin's internal input event passing works and
makes it easier to get touch event: one does not explicitly has to grab
the events. It's also closer to Wayland where all input events are
available.
As a first example the Present Windows effect is adjusted and allows to
activate windows through the touch screen. As much code as possible is
shared with pointer input.

Summary:
A new method to tell the effects system whether the compositor scene
is able to drive animations. E.g. on software emulation (llvmpipe) it's
better to not do any animations at all.
This information can be used by effects to adjust their behavior, e.g.
PresentWindows could skip transitions or effects can use it in their
supported check to completely disable themselves.
As a first step all scripted effects are considered to be unsupported
if animations are not supported. They inherit AnimationEffect and are
all about driving animations.
The information whether animations are supported comes from the Scene.
It's implemented in the following way:
* XRender: animations are always supported
* QPainter: animations are never supported
* OpenGL: animations are supported, except for software emulation
In addition - for easier testing - there is a new env variable
KWIN_EFFECTS_FORCE_ANIMATIONS to overwrite the selection.
